Naples special needs care

Special needs pediatric dentistry in Naples, shaped by what you know about your child.

Special needs dental care for Naples children happens right here, at our North Naples office just off Immokalee Road, with no trip to Fort Myers needed. It is a bright, playful children's office, so we start from what you know about your child, and one phone call is where you tell us which parts to plan around.

A special needs pediatric dentist in Naples who takes your lead

A special needs pediatric dentist in Naples should fit the appointment to your child, instead of expecting your child to fit the appointment. That is what special needs dentistry means on Piper Blvd: individualized care, worked out with you, for children with special healthcare needs and for any child an ordinary appointment does not suit.

The team reads the notes from your booking call before your family walks in and treats them as the plan, because you have watched how your child handles new places and new people, and we have not yet.

Our special needs dental care page covers the approach in full, including what each accommodation involves. This page covers how it works in Naples: the rooms, the drive in, and the phone call that sets it all up.

What changes for your child at the Naples office

Three things anchor this care: extra time, a calmer room, and the same patient team at every visit. What is particular to Naples is the building they happen in:

  • A calmer room. If your child would do better with less going on, ask for a calmer room when you book, and it is planned before you arrive. Our treatment bay is open-plan and wrapped in reef murals floor to ceiling, so the request is worth making.
  • Looking up from the chair. When the chair reclines in the treatment bay, the sixteen-foot whale shark is overhead and the screens above the treatment windows play underwater video. Some children love having something to watch. If moving pictures or bright color are hard for your child, say so on the call so the team can plan around it.
  • You in the room. Tell the front desk you would like to stay in the room, and the team plans the visit with you in it.

Autism-friendly visits: the Naples order, in advance

An autism-friendly dentist in Naples should be able to tell you, before the day, what happens first, what comes next, and how the visit ends. Here is the usual order of a routine visit at this office. Park in the quiet plaza, right outside our door. Check in, with the paperwork already done. Then the lobby, with the blue whale overhead and the S.S. Flossy at kid height. Then the chair in the open treatment bay, under the whale shark: an exam with the teeth counted out loud, a cleaning with a small polisher, digital X-rays only if they are needed, and a few minutes of coaching to finish.

You can walk your child through that order at home and tell us on the call which step is likely to be hardest. Our page on autism-friendly dental visits covers more ways to make an appointment predictable, and our dental visit social story walks your child through one before the day.

An honest note about our lively lobby

We would rather say this now than have you find out at the door. The Naples office was built to delight children, and it is lively on purpose. A blue whale hangs over the lobby, the S.S. Flossy pirate nook waits to be boarded, and a deep-sea diver stands by for photos. It is a children's office, and it sounds like one.

For many children that is the best part. For others it is a lot of sound and color before the appointment has started, and you will know which way your child leans. Asking for a quieter time, or for the calmer room, is exactly what the booking call is for. It is not a special favor.

Sensory-friendly dental visits start with naming which parts are hard, and in this office you can be specific: the sound and color of the lobby, the open treatment bay, the moving pictures above the treatment windows. Tell us which of those to plan around, and if headphones, sunglasses or a favorite blanket already help at home, mention them on the call so the team expects them. Our guide to sensory sensitivities at the dentist covers the rest.

Booking is one quick call.

One number reaches both offices, Monday to Friday 8 to 5. Your child's health details stay in a conversation with our front desk, never typed into a website.

Start early, then go one step further each visit

Why an early start matters even more

Children with special needs deserve special attention, and part of that is timing. Starting preventative care early is particularly important, because many health conditions cannot be prevented, and dental disease is one that can.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth. Starting that early often means the first visits happen while there is little or nothing to fix. After that, checkups every six months keep little problems little. For some children, your pediatric dentist may suggest a closer rhythm and will explain why. Our page on checkups and cleanings at our Naples office walks through a routine visit.

Short, positive visits that build on each other

The order above can also be taken a piece at a time. One visit might be the walk in from the plaza, a look around the lobby, and a first try of the chair under the whale shark. The next can add a count of teeth, and the one after that a cleaning. How far each visit goes is something you and your pediatric dentist decide together.

Before the first one, see the real rooms on our Naples office tour. The free storybook Shades Meets the Whale Shark takes place in this very office, so the whale shark can be familiar before your child stands beneath her.

When more help is needed: sedation as one tool among several

The whole comfort menu is offered at the Naples office, so more help, when a plan calls for it, does not mean a different office. It runs from the gentlest option up: topical anesthetic cream, gentle local anesthetics, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and IV sedation with a highly trained pediatric anesthesiologist for longer treatment plans. The first two only numb, and with laughing gas your child stays awake. IV sedation is the only option on the menu where a child sleeps through the treatment.

Each step is described on our page about sedation options at our Naples office, and the specifics for your child's plan come from us, never from a web page. You will always discuss the options with your pediatric dentist first. Nothing happens without you.

Getting to the Naples office with your child

1035 Piper Blvd, Suite 103, Naples, FL 34110. The office is in North Naples, just off Immokalee Road between US 41 and Airport-Pulling Road, so Immokalee Road is the one to aim for. From US 41 (the Tamiami Trail), turn east onto Immokalee Road. From I-75, take the Immokalee Road exit and head west. When you book, ask for directions from your own street.

Parking is in a quiet plaza, right outside our door, so the walk from the car is short. New patient forms arrive ahead of time, so you can fill them in at home instead of in the lobby. Brothers and sisters can be booked back to back, which is routine here. This is the same practice, on the same phone number, as our Fort Myers office. For photos of the office and everything else we do here, visit our Naples pediatric dentist page.

Booking a special needs visit at our Naples office

Booking is by phone on purpose. Your child's health details stay in a conversation with our front desk, never typed into a website. One number reaches both offices, Monday to Friday, 8 to 5, and a real human answers: (239) 482-2722.

Use that call for more than a date. The front desk keeps a place for each of these notes:

  • first visit ever
  • a nervous child
  • sensory sensitivities
  • special healthcare needs
  • parent stays in the room
  • prefiere espaƱol (in our practice, Dr. Torres speaks fluent English and Spanish)

Beyond those, tell us whether your child would rather explore the lobby or keep that part brief, and whether a brother or sister should be booked back to back or on a separate trip.

To arrive with a plan, our page on preparing for a special needs dental visit covers what to ask and what to pack. Questions before you book are welcome on the same line: (239) 482-2722.

Parents ask us

Is there a special needs dentist in Naples, or do we have to go to Fort Myers?

Right here in Naples. Special needs dentistry is part of the full range of care at our office on Piper Blvd, so there is no need to drive to Fort Myers for it. Both offices share one phone line: (239) 482-2722.

Is your Naples office autism-friendly?

Honestly, the lobby is lively by design. A calmer room, extra time and the same patient team are there when you ask on the booking call, and the free storybook Shades Meets the Whale Shark, set in this office, lets your child meet it at home first. More on autism-friendly dental visits.

Can we see the Naples office before the first appointment?

From home, yes. Our Naples office tour has photos of the lobby, the whale shark over the treatment bay and the screens above the treatment windows. On the day, you are welcome to arrive a few minutes early so your child can look around first.

Can I stay with my child during a special needs visit at the Naples office?

Yes. Mention it on the booking call, and the team plans the visit with you in the room. For children under three, most visits are a gentle lap exam with you holding your child anyway. If sedation is ever part of your child's plan, ask your pediatric dentist how that visit runs, including where you will be.

My child is older and has never seen a dentist, or the last visit went badly. Is it too late to start?

No. Tell the front desk your child's age and what happened before, and the first visit here can stay short, then build from there. Starting later than the first birthday needs no apology.

Is IV sedation available at the Naples office for a child with special healthcare needs?

Yes. The whole comfort menu is offered in Naples, IV sedation with a pediatric anesthesiologist included. It is never assumed, and the decision is made with your pediatric dentist. Our page on sedation for kids in Naples explains each option.
