The ladder of repairs
Most restorative care falls somewhere on a short ladder, and your pediatric dentist will tell you exactly which rung fits and why.
Tooth-colored fillings. For most cavities, a composite filling that bonds to the tooth, preserves healthy tooth structure, and matches the smile around it.
Kid-sized crowns. For a tooth too damaged for a filling: durable stainless steel for the back molars that do heavy chewing, natural-looking resin for front teeth that do the smiling.
Nerve treatments. When decay reaches deep enough to inflame the nerve, a pulpotomy can calm the hurt and save the tooth, usually finished with a crown. Parents sometimes hear this called a baby root canal, and it is far less dramatic than the name.

When a tooth truly has to go
Sometimes the kindest repair is a gentle goodbye: a tooth too damaged to save, or a stubborn baby tooth blocking the adult one behind it. Gentle extractions are done unhurried, with the full comfort menu available, and when a baby tooth leaves earlier than nature intended, a space maintainer holds its spot so the adult tooth still arrives in the right lane.

How do I know which repair my child needs?
You will not have to guess. After the exam, your pediatric dentist explains what they found, which repair fits and why, and what happens if you wait, in plain words before you leave the room. Nothing is decided at you.
Why fix a baby tooth that will fall out anyway?
Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth, guide speech, and do years of chewing. Losing one too early can crowd the smile that is still coming, and an untreated cavity can hurt and spread. Fixing baby teeth is an investment in the adult smile behind them.
Will my child be uncomfortable during a repair?
Comfort is planned before the repair starts, not improvised during it. Options range from topical numbing cream and gentle local anesthetics to laughing gas and, for bigger treatment plans, IV sedation with a pediatric anesthesiologist. You and your pediatric dentist choose together, and nothing happens without you.
Can everything be done in one visit?
Often, yes: a straightforward filling is a single short appointment. Bigger plans are paced to your child, and sometimes grouped so fewer visits are needed. The plan, including how many visits and in what order, is laid out for you before anything begins.
