What is actually in the lobby

In Fort Myers, the shipwreck sits in the lobby alongside a mermaid, surfboard game consoles built into the walls, Kids Korner, and a friendly gator statue most kids want to say hello to on the way in. It is meant to be looked at, pointed to and explored, not just glanced at on the way to a chair.

Naples has its own version of the same idea, built around water rather than wreckage. A sixteen-foot whale shark hangs over the treatment bay with a blue whale for company in the lobby, the S.S. Flossy pirate nook waits to be boarded, and a deep-sea diver stands by for photos. Shades, our dog in black sunglasses, shows up in both buildings.

It depends on which office you mean

If your child saw a photo online and asked whether the shipwreck is real, it is worth checking which office it came from first. Only Fort Myers has the shipwreck. Naples trades it for the whale shark overhead. Both offices are part of the same practice with the same one phone number, but the decor is not identical between them, so a photo from one will not match what your child sees walking into the other.

What counts as the best part also depends entirely on the child. Some kids beeline for the game consoles. Some want the gator photo before anything else. Some barely notice the decor and are more interested in meeting the team. All of that is normal, and none of it predicts how the actual appointment goes.

Why build it at all

A child whose attention is genuinely caught by a shipwreck or a whale shark has less of it left over for worrying about a checkup. That is the entire reasoning. It is not decoration chosen to look nice in photographs, it is a deliberate first few minutes built to turn a medical office into somewhere a kid wants to walk into.

It does not land the same way for every child, and that is fine. A few kids find a sixteen-foot anything overhead more overwhelming than exciting, especially a child with sensory sensitivities.
